Sukkot in Shdema

The real battle over Shdema is starting now 0

————————————————————————–

With mixed feelings of happiness and worry we came to Shdema yesterday, Friday February 5th to listen to Prof. Hillel Weiss’s lecture on the literature of the first aliyah.

Feelings of happiness-because of the IDF’s decision to return to Shdema and set up an outpost there.

Feelings of worry- worrying whether the outpost would stand firm against the international pressure against Israel.

When we came down the hill at the end of the morning, a consular car was there, watching our moves. When we came near to try and see who was inside, we saw the driver was a bodyguard. Somebody was in the back. The back window was very dark. When we tried to approach the car even more to see who the person in the back was, the car fled towards Bet Sahour. We drove after them to photograph them and they fled towards Jerusalem. There is no doubt that in the car was a person who did not want us to know he was there. We think it might be the USA consul himself. A picture of the car can be seen by clicking on:
http://www.yeshabulletin.com/FIGHT%20BACK/FightBack.htm

The Haarets newspaper and their reporter Amira Hess* came out on Thursday and Friday with articles against the IDF’s return to Shdema, articles in favor of the Arabs of Bet Sahour and in favor of the illegal Arab construction at the bottom of Shdema claiming that the lands of Shdema have been taken away from the Arabs.

The truth is exactly the opposite. Since the Oslo agreements most of the area has been taken away from Israel and has become area A (under full Arab control). Gush Etzion has been left with only 4% of the land and from these 4% they want to take away Shdema from us!

About the second claim, i.e. that all the Arabs want is to build a hospital in Shdema that will serve “all”…we checked and saw that they have lots and lots of lands in area A on which they can build hospitals if that was what they really wanted. It is clear that the claim that they want to build a hospital there is just an excuse that sounds very “humane” when their real purpose is: to take away from Israel yet another area C under Israeli control and break the Jewish continuity between Jerusalem and Eastern Gush Etzion.

On June first of 2009, Shaul Goldstein, mayor of Gush Etzion, wrote a letter to the Defense Minister explaining why one should not allow the Arabs to build a hospital in Shdema claiming rightfully that it will not end with a hospital: “the Palestinians will then continue and demand to receive the rest of the area into their hands too- claiming they need parking spaces, and areas in which to grow and expand in the future”.

Unlike what Haarets is trying to claim, it is clear that the IDF’s decision to return to Shdema is a purely professional decision. The IDF understands the strategic importance of Shdema for the security of the area. Anybody with common sense understands one cannot abandon such an important place.

The Committee for a Jewish Shdema and Women in Green will continue with its activities in Shdema as planned.

Next week we will have the pleasure to hear a lecture by Emanuel Shilo, editor of the “Besheva” newspaper who will talk in Hebrew on “How to turn the plate around to our favor”.

The presence of each and every one of us in Shdema is now more important than ever. The support of all our members together with the constant presence of the devoted activists from Har Choma, Jerusalem.
Bet Shemesh, Efrat, Gush Etzion, kiryat Arab Hevron, together with the involvement of the members of Knesset active on behalf of Shdema- is what brought progress in the struggle for a Jewish Shdema. Now we must continue and make even more of an effort to come every week. Please G-d, we will succeed.

Israel in Haiti 0

Dear Friends,

The following letter by David Yehezkel says it all. Below the letter we include the link to the video clip about Israel’s amazing field hospital in Haiti.

Thank you Helen Freedman from AFSI for forwarding the information.

ISRAEL’S DISPROPORTIONAL RESPONSE
by David Yehezkel

Many countries and world leaders have accused Israel of responding disproportionately to aggression from Hizballah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. However, it is time that the world press and media speak of another disproportionate response from Israel.

The terrible disastrous earthquake in Haiti has generated responses from many nations. The US has sent supplies and personnel, Britain sent 64 firemen and 8 volunteers, France sent troops for Search and Rescue. Many large and wealthy nations of the world sent money. The Arab and Moslem world nothing.

Israel, a nation of 7.5 million people has sent a team of 220 people that include Medical personnel and will establish the largest field hospital in Haiti, treating up to 500 people a day, an experienced Search and Rescue team and medical supplies. As in previous earthquake disasters, such as in Gujarat India in 2001 and in Turkey, in the bombings in Kenya, Israel has been one of the most generous givers of aid and assistance

Turkey seems to have forgotten this help as its extreme Moslem Government is cozying up to Iran.

Judge Goldstone, where are you now? Eating your heart out and hanging your head down in shame I hope.

The favorite occupation in the UN is Israel bashing. More resolutions have been passed condemning Israel than all the so called democratic nations such as Sudan, China, Russia and others for their crimes against their minorities.

I think it is time that the world should know about Israel’s disproportionate response.

FROM AFSI:
Please view this video from CNN. The reporter discovers, to her amazement, that Israel responded to the earthquake devastation in Haiti from “the other side of the world” with the most advanced field hospital installation possible. She marvels that the U.S., so much closer to Haiti, hasn’t done the same. Viewing this video will make you very proud of Israel’s accomplishments.

The world needs to learn a great lesson from Israel!

Renewal of struggle in Shdema against anarchists 0

Instructions for unsubscribing can be found in the footer of this message.

————————————————————————–

Erev Shabbat, Parshat Vaere 5770
Friday, January 15, 2010

The struggle for Shdema in Gush Etzion is starting up again.

After a relatively quiet period at Shdema of ongoing cultural activity, those coming to Shdema this morning were shocked to discover that all of the base’s buildings had been spray painted by leftist activists and Christian anarchists.

The graffiti consisted of verses from the Bible and slogans of “love and peace.” From the quantity of graffiti on the walls, it was obvious that they had spent hours at the base without the army interfering.

During the course of the lecture by Dr. Tzipi Rainey on the author Naomi Frankel and her writing, the Shdema Youth organized and repainted the entire base, expunging all the graffiti.

The question arose among the audience of the permissibility of expuning verses containing the name of G-d. The Committee for a Jewish Shdema argued that since this was a hostile invasion, despite the “love and peace” slogans, of sovereign Israeli territory and a challenge to the Jews: “You don’t belong here,” this was undoubtedly an attack on Jewish honor. Any thinking person realizes that just as we wouldn’t let a stranger into our living room to draw on the walls, not even verses from the Bible, this certainly applies in this case.

In the atmosphere of capitulation that reigns in Israel at present, the Arabs and their supporters are raising their head. We therefore were forced, not only to remove the graffiti, but to respond in the same manner. At the end of the morning, Shdema activists went down to the illegal compound that the Arabs built at the foot of Shdema, in Area C. a building against which destruction orders exist from the Civila administration but of course arent implemented.

They went in and sprayed all of the Arab illegal buildings, inside and out, on the walls, on the doors, and on the floors.

An IDF officer who was present there, promised “payback”, against the Jews, of course, and said: “I will personally see to it that you won’t go up to Shdema any more.” It’s a pity that this determination is revealed only against Jews, and not against the enemy. In light of this, the Committee for Jewish Shdema and Women in Green call upon all the people of Israel to come next Friday, January 22 (the eve of parshat Bo), and demonstrate a massive presence at the site. Israel must stop self-restraint and go over to the offensive in the struggle for Eretz Israel.

Planned for Friday next week, at 9:00 a.m.: a lecture by Dr. Haggai Ben-Artzi on the subject: “Eretz Israel in the Literature of the Kabbalists.”

America: Admit You’re at War 1

Instructions for unsubscribing can be found in the footer of this message.

————————————————————————–

From: “Naomi Ragen”

Friends,

Back in the time when Israelis decided to paint doves and declare the war with Palestinian terror over, we sane people didn’t understand what was going on. We thought: Hey, there must be something wrong with our understanding. We still think Arafat is a terrorist -peace prize or not- who is trying to kill us. Then in 2000 when our buses started blowing up, and our government called the scattered pieces of
Israelis: “sacrifices for peace” we finally understood who was sane and who was crazy.

As I feared, Americans are just now waking up to the reality of their incomprehensible choice of leadership. I am so sorry Americans had to find out the truth the same way we Israelis did: the hard way. Let’s hope they do something, fast, because take if from someone who had a hotel blow up around her, the alternative is horrific. Below, an article by Charles Krauthammer, who always tells it like it is.

Admit the country’s at war
The administration’s response to the Christmas Day attack makes nation uneasy.
By Charles Krauthammer
Jan. 4, 2010

Janet Napolitano - former Arizona governor, now overmatched secretary of homeland security - will forever be remembered for having said of the attempt to bring down an airliner over Detroit: “The system worked.”

The attacker’s concerned father had warned U.S. authorities about his son’s jihadist tendencies. The would-be bomber paid cash and checked no luggage on a transoceanic flight. He was nonetheless allowed to fly, and would have killed 288 people in the air alone, save for a faulty detonator and quick actions by a few passengers.

Heck of a job, Brownie.

The reason the country is uneasy about the Obama administration’s response to this attack is a distinct sense of not just incompetence but incomprehension.

>From the very beginning, President Obama has relentlessly tried to
downplay and deny the nature of the terrorist threat we continue to face. Napolitano renames terrorism “man-caused disasters.” Obama goes abroad and pledges to cleanse America of its post-9/11 counterterrorist sins. Hence, Guantanamo will close, CIA interrogators will face a special prosecutor, and Khalid Sheik Mohammed will bask in a civilian trial in New York - a trifecta of political correctness and image management.

And just to make sure even the dimmest understand, Obama banishes the term war on terror. It’s over - that is, if it ever existed.

Obama may have declared the war over. Unfortunately al-Qaeda has not.
Which gives new meaning to the term asymmetric warfare.

And produces linguistic - and logical - oddities that littered Obama’s public pronouncements following the Christmas Day attack.

In his first statement, Obama referred to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab as “an isolated extremist.” This is the same president who, after the Fort Hood shooting, warned us “against jumping to conclusions” - code for daring to associate Nidal Hasan’s mass murder with his Islamist ideology. Yet, with Abdulmutallab, Obama jumped immediately to the conclusion, against all existing evidence, that the bomber acted alone.

More jarring still were Obama’s references to the terrorist as a “suspect” who “allegedly tried to ignite an explosive device.” You can hear the echo of FDR: “Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - Japanese naval and air force suspects allegedly bombed Pearl Harbor.”

Obama reassured the nation that this “suspect” had been charged.
Reassurance? The president should be saying: We have captured an enemy combatant - an illegal combatant under the laws of war: no uniform, direct attack on civilians - and now to prevent future attacks, he is being interrogated regarding information he may have about al-Qaeda in Yemen.

Instead, Abdulmutallab is dispatched to some Detroit-area jail and immediately lawyered up. At which point - surprise! - he stops talking.

This absurdity renders hollow Obama’s declaration that “we will not rest until we find all who were involved.” Once we’ve given Abdulmutallab the right to remain silent, we have gratuitously forfeited our right to find out from him precisely who else was involved, namely those who trained, instructed, armed and sent him.

This is all quite mad even in Obama’s terms. He sends 30,000 troops to fight terror overseas, yet if any terrorists come to attack us here, they are magically transformed from enemy into defendant.

The logic is perverse. If we find Abdulmutallab in an al-Qaeda training camp in Yemen, where he is merely preparing for a terror attack, we snuff him out with a Predator - no judge, no jury, no qualms. But if we catch him in the United States in the very act of mass murder, he instantly acquires protection not just from execution by drone but even from interrogation.

The president said that this incident highlights “the nature of those who threaten our homeland.” But the president is constantly denying the nature of those who threaten our homeland. On Tuesday, he referred five times to Abdulmutallab (and his terrorist ilk) as “extremist(s).”

A man who shoots abortion doctors is an extremist. An eco-fanatic who torches logging sites is an extremist. Abdulmutallab is not one of these. He is a jihadist. And unlike the guys who shoot abortion doctors, jihadists have cells all over the world; they blow up trains in London, nightclubs in Bali and airplanes over Detroit (if they can); and are openly pledged to war on America.

Any government can through laxity let someone slip through the cracks.
But a government that refuses to admit that we are at war, indeed, refuses even to name the enemy - jihadist is a word banished from the Obama lexicon - turns laxity into a governing philosophy.

More Destruction of Houses in Neguhot — Preparing to Rebuild For the Third Time 0

Instructions for unsubscribing can be found in the footer of this message.

————————————————————————–

Dear Friends,

Sunday night, January 4th, at 1 a.m., police and Yassam forces entered the community of Neguhot in the southern Hevron hills, and, like thieves in the night, went to the “Beit Hakerem” hill and ordered the Ben-David family to get dressed, and leave their home into the night cold. Once again, bulldozers destroyed their house, rebuilt only a month and a half after their original, beautiful home was destroyed.
Two other homes, built nearby in solidarity with the Ben-David’s, were also destroyed. Again, the families’ household goods were scattered along the hilltop. The houses themselves, constructed of fiberboard panels, were turned into a muddy conglomerate.

Yehudit Ben David called us early in the morning. This is what she told us:

“At around 1:00 in the morning we heard loud knocks on the door.
“Police, open the door!!” they shouted. We opened the door and saw the troops outside. “We came to destroy your house. Get dressed and get out”. Then they cut off the electricity and the entire house was in the dark”.Yehudit and her husband told the police that their six children were sleeping and they needed some time to get organized and wake up the children, etc. The policeman said: “I must come in and see if you are not lying and really have children sleeping here”. The policeman came in with a flashlight and confirmed that there indeed were six children sleeping there, aged one year old to 12 year old.
“Get them up and get out” he told the parents. Yehudit said: “but there is no light. You cut off the electricity. We can’t see a thing.
Can I at least get one of your flashlights? Each and every one of your policemen have flashlights- give us one”. The policeman refused.

“Somehow we managed to get the kids up” says Yehudit. “Meanwhile Arabs who had been employed by the police , entered our house and started taking out our possessions, simply throwing everything outside, on the muddy floor - the fridge, the matresses, the linens, the books, the clothes…” After that the bulldozer came and destroyed our house and an additional two that belong to our neighbors.

“Luckily, on the nearby hill that is also part of Neguhot, where some ten families live, there was an empty caravan, and we temporarily moved in there, till we can rebuild our house on the “Bet Hakerem”
hill, for the third time. “The problem is”, said Yehudit ben David, that now the “Beit Hakerem hill” is empty and Arabs who come by foot from their village, kilometers away, approach the hill and steal our belongings. They grab whatever they can and walk back to their village far away.We must find a way of priotecting the hill.

Women in Green immediately organized a group of young men to stand guard at the hill and together we drove out to Neguhot. The scene of the destruction was heartbreaking. Just a few days ago we had come there to protest the fact that Arabs had thrown a molotov cocktail against a bus, wounding an 18 year old girl. Instead of trying to catch the Arab terrorists, Israeli security forces were busy planning the destruction of the Ben David house.

Through the ugly stratagems of Defense Minister Barak and the deafening silence of Prime Minister Netanyahu, the power of the state continues to be mobilized against “enemies of the state” like the Ben-David’s and their neighbors, whose “crime” is their desire to make their homes in the Land of Israel generally, and within the legal boundaries of their community of Neguhot specifically. They built their homes in a designated new neighborhood of Neguhot to prevent Arab squatters from expropriating their community’s land, as is happening throughout the Negev and the Galil along with Judea and Samaria.

The spirit of these families won’t be broken: they are ready to rebuild their houses anew. We, secure for now in our nice, warm homes, have to do our own mobilizing — of ourselves — to provide them with the resources to rebuild their homes for the third time.

We call on all lovers of the Land of Israel to contribute to the Yibane Fund, currently being established by Women In Green for building and settlement in the hills of Judea.

While organizing the launching of this fund, the destruction in Neguhot gave us an object lesson of the fund’s purpose and necessity.

We can rebuild the houses destroyed in Neguhot within 10 to 14 days if we can collect the funding. It will take 100,000 NIS (some $30,000) to construct three new very basic structures.

The struggle over the future of the Land of Israel is being waged on the hilltops of Judea and Samaria.

We, with God’s help and with your help, will ignore all anti-Zionist and anti-Jewish decrees and continue to build our Biblical homeland.

Tens in Neguhot 0

Instructions for unsubscribing can be found in the footer of this message.

————————————————————————–

Tens of lovers of the Land of Israel, from Jerusalem, Kiryat Arba Hevron, Gush Etzion and southern Hevron showed a Jewish presence yesterday (Tuesday) on the Neguhot road, which, as we recall, partially passes through the Palestinian Authority.

This unbearable situation, which exists for years already, must be corrected immediately and complete Israeli sovereignty must be reinstalled on the Adurayim-Neguhot road.

The car convoy departed from Kiryat Arba Hevron. Cars were proudly waving the Israeli flag. The convoy arrived at Neguhot and held a march near the place where an Arab terrorist had thrown a Molotov cocktail at an egged bus two days ago, burning the legs of an 18 year old girl .

After the march, the activists went to plant trees in the Bet Hakerem neighborhood of Neguhot where two months ago two houses had been destroyed. It was heartwarming to see how the two families had not been broken by this political destruction of their house and managed to rebuild a home (much more simple than the original ones) in which they live, despite the very harsh physical conditions. When we were there, youngsters were preparing the roof for the upcoming rain by putting plastic sheets on top of the building.

Against the government’s weakness, the families in the hills of Neguhot express strength and courage.

Zionism 2010 at its best!

At a time when the political echelons show weakness and a willingness to capitulate, we, the people, must initiate activities that express and increase our Jewish sovereignty and stronghold over the Land of Israel.

The Neguhot activity was organized by Women in Green and the Action Committees of Efrat-Gush etzion-Kiryat Arba-Hevron-southern Hebron.

FRIDAYS IN SHDEMA

The event in the Land of Israel Cultural Center in Shdema this past Friday started with a demand to the Prime Minister in relation to the murder of Rabbi Meir Chai HY”D. “Get a hold of yourself immediately and stop caving in to the Arab enemy” said the members of the Committee for a Jewish Shdema and Women in Green. “The murder of rabbi Chai HY”D was expected. When you open roadblocks, when you agree to release hundreds of murderers, when you instill in the Arab enemy hopes for more and more concessions, you weaken Israel and every weakness invites another terror attack. Now, more than ever, it is our obligation to fight with even more determination for each and every place in the land of Israel, and that is what we are doing in Shdema, among other places.”

Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Rabbi of Efrat, spoke about the parashat hashavua and described how the story is relevant to today’s events.

Yehuda, expert in negotiations, wanted to soften Joseph. He told him how his father is already very old and how much he will hurt if he loses another son. In his dealings to achieve what he wanted, (i.e.
Binyamin) Yehuda was making sure to use arguments that would have an effect on the person he was dealing with. Rabbi Riskin said that this was a tremendous lesson in negotiating. One needs to understand how the head of the other side is working. This is in sharp contrast to today’s government that is acting like a beaten wife, added rabbi Riskin. The government thinks that if we give and give- that we also will receive. But that is not the case. We must know the mentality of the other side and stand firm on our interests and not on that from the other side.

Rabbi Riskin was disturbed to hear about the situation in Shdema. That the Arabs had been allowed to build an entire complex despite it being area C, belonging to Shdema, with the financial help of international organizations like USAID and we the Jews are not even allowed to fix anything let alone build. The plastic sheets that had been put up last week to protect us from the rain had been torn down. Likewise, we found a booklet in Shdema by the World Health organization whose members must have gone up to Shdema during the week , planning how to take away Shdema from us, and purposely left their traces there.

The Friday event, in which tens of people participated, was accompanied by erev Shabbat music from Eli Gilboa, resident of Kiryat Arba Hevron, and his accordion.

This coming FRIDAY January 1st, CAROLINE GLICK, senior contributing Editor of the Jerusalem Post, will be talking in SHDEMA on “Obama and Israel”. The lecture will be at 10:00 am.

Caroline will be speaking in Hebrew and there will be simultaneous translation into English with earphones.

Dear Friends,

A lot has happened in these past few days. Following are a few announcements related to these events.

1) First, about the hesder yeshiva saga:

Unfortunately, the Iggud Hayeshivot Rabbis have shown weakness and have forced Rabbi Melamed to sign a document, naively hoping that this would appease Ehud Barak and convince him to allow the Har Bracha yeshiva to stay within the Hesder program.

What made things worse was that the Rabbis’ capitulation came on the same day that the media divulged a shocking IDF document that was leaked and that described how the IDF is preparing for an additional expulsion of Jews and for actually fighting the Jews of Judea and Samaria who might oppose the upcoming destruction of homes. Instead of loudly protesting this document, and demanding from Netanyahu to oust Ehud Barak from the government, the Rabbis continued to try and please Barak.

For shortened article in English summarizing the Hebrew document:

Ehud Barak was not impressed with the signed document and has announced that the Hesder arrangement with Har Bracha is over.

Luckily, many in our camp have not been impressed by the Rabbis’
capitulation either and continue to proudly declare that soldiers have joined the army to fight the Arab enemy and to protect the people and the Land of Israel, and not to carry out leftist policies of expulsion of Jews from our homeland.

Below please find a translation of a petition supporting Rabbi Melamed’s position. In addition, two days ago, soldiers in reserve have hung up a sign near the community of Avnei Hefetz, saying: “We are all students of Har Bracha”.

Ultimately, it is up to us, parents, grandparents and families of soldiers, to pass on a clear message to our boys in the army: You have joined the army to fight the enemy and protect your people and your homeland. We trust you that over the years you have been blessed with a Jewish conscience and thus you will never obey an order that goes against your people and your land.

2) Women in Green continues with the “Build the land of Israel”
project. In the next few days we will give you more details. Meanwhile you can enjoy the following Arutz 7 story about our Women in Green building event in Netzer last week:

Thank you Yoni Kempinski for posting the story. Thank you Rivka Ryback for filming and editing the movie.

3) Update on the struggle for a Jewish Shdema:

In SHDEMA, plastic sheets on the windows and two kerosene heaters taken from Bet Hashalom in Hevron, protected against the cold the tens of participants who came to Shdema on Friday of Hanukka.

Despite the bitter cold, the heavy rain, the mist and the winds, tens of people from around Israel came this past Friday of Hanukka to Shdema.

Rabbi Yisrael Ariel warmed the heart of all with his very clear lecture on the real borders of the Land of Israel. “We are here in Shdema because of the pact of Hashem with his People promising us this land, and not because of it being an abandoned military base, said Rabbi Ariel.

Musician Zvi Zelevsky played the guitar and sang his excellent songs.
The public wanted “encore” and “encore”.

On the walls there was an exhibition of amazing paintings by artist Garik Zilberman on the topic of Hanukka.

The activity for the children was adapted according to these days of “freeze decrees”. Large amounts of Lego were brought to Shdema and the children proudly defied the decrees against building- building from Lego a huge hanukia, the Bet Hamikdash and a new community (the Civil administration did not come to stop the young builders).

The large puddles created by the blessed rain provided the children with an additional fun activity of paper boats floating in the water.

The Friday before, erev Hanuka, historian Dr Arieh Morgenstern and Rabbi Uziya Sharbaf, with the moving introduction by Rabbi Eliyahu
Aviad- spoke about the students of the Vilna Gaon (the GR’A) and their aliya to the land of Israel, which this year we are celebrating as being 200 years later.

Dr. Morgenstern spoke about the historical aspects and Rabbi Sharbaf about the spiritual motives behind their aliya to Israel. The students of the GR’A basically launched a new era by canceling the three oaths and starting activism, long before the first and second aliya.

In the past year and a half, Shdema has become a vibrant Land of Israel Cultural Center to which tens of people are drawn, every Friday morning, adults and youngsters, religious and not religious, all deeply understanding that it is inconceivable to give away Shdema to the Arabs. In order for Shdema to stay in Jewish hands we have to increase the Jewish presence at the site. The Land of Israel Cultural Center in Shdema is unique for it combines, on the spot, the actual struggle for the Land of Israel together with lectures on our right to the Land of Israel, concerts and exhibitions all flavored with erets Israel scents. In these days where our right to our land is being questioned, we must, even more than before, increase the Jewish presence at the site.

This coming Friday at 9:30am, we will hear a lecture in Shdema by Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Rabbi of Efrat on the topic: “Are we commanded to convert the world?” (lecture will be in Hebrew).

Petition of Hesder Yeshiva Educators in Support of R. Melamed December 17, 2009 by Gil Ronen
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/135066

Support for Rabbi Eliezer Melamed, Head of Har Bracha Yeshiva, is growing. A petition supporting Rabbi Melamed in his ideological showdown with the Minister of Defense, signed by rabbis and educators countrywide, has reached Arutz Sheva.

The letter reads as follows:
An open letter
>From rabbis/educators in the Hesder yeshivas
To the yeshiva students, and youth awaiting conscription

Dear students and youths!

We turn to you at a time in which many in the country are discussing the relationship between Torah commandments and the authority of the military commander.

As educators who send their students to serve in the IDF, we are committed to answer this question in a clear and precise way, as we were taught by our greatest rabbis: Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren of blessed memory, Chief Rabbi Avraham Elkana Shapira of blessed memory, Rabbi Shaul Yisraeli of blessed memory and Rabbi Moshe Tzvi Neria of blessed memory.

We have therefore written the following before you:

May you only be strong!

By the grace of G-d we have been given the gift of living in a time of redemption. A time of ingathering of exiles, of establishment of the State and a Jewish defense force, the Israel Defense Force or IDF. All these constitute a great sanctification of G-d’s name and are steps toward the complete redemption.
To our sorrow, for some time now, the army is also being used for purposes that have nothing to do with defending Israel, and are contrary to the will of Hashem, as it appears in the holy Torah. This situation throws the soldiers of the IDF into a reality in which there is a contradiction between the commandments of G-d and the orders of the military commander.

Therefore, we must teach ourselves and all of Israel, that our belief in Hashem the G-d of Israel and the acceptance of the yoke of His Kingdom, are the source of our devotion in the war to assist Israel.
We need to make it clear to everyone that this loyalty to Hashem stands above all other loyalties, to the government or to the army.

Through this very trouble shall we be delivered.

We will make it clear that while it is true that the army has one commander he, too, must be loyal to the G-d of Israel. This clarification will uplift our army to loyalty to Hashem our G-d, a loyalty through which the true Israeli military consciousness shall be clarified. It is not “my power and the might of my hand that hath gotten me this wealth, but the Lord your God… gives you power to get wealth” (Deuteronomy 8).

The Gemara in Sanhedrin Tractate teaches us that it is a mistake to declare loyalty to a flesh and blood king without noting that our primary loyalty is to the Word of Hashem!

The Yad Ramah [a 12th century Jewish sage from Spain ed.] explains the passage by saying that any declaration of loyalty must be carried out in the fashion of the sons of Gad and Reuven, who told Joshua: “As we obeyed everything that Moses told us so shall we obey you, only let the Lord your G-d be with you as He was with Moses; Every man who goes against your orders will be put to death, may you only be strong.”

They declared loyalty and then lessened it, in case they would be ordered to transgress against the Torah and its commandments.

We teach our students, the Hesder Yeshiva students, to be loyal soldiers out of a commitment to to the Word of Hashem. We are certain that the Name of the Lord which we bear is what strikes fear into the hearts of our enemies, and it is what awards us with salvation and the glory of victory.

Signed,

Rabbi Yigal Abutbul, Rishon LeTzion Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Ben Tzon Elgazi, Kerem BeYavneh Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Shmuel Eckstein, Afikei Daat Hesder Yeshiva in Sderot Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakai, Kiryat Arba Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Shlomo Binyamin, Lev LaDaat Hesder Yeshiva in Sderot Rabbi Ariel Bareli, Afikei Daat Hesder Yeshiva in Sderot Rabbi Ohad Baruchi, Tverya Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Eyal Gefen, Rishon LeTzion Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Gross, Mitzpeh Eshtamoa Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Amir Garti, Shavei Shomron Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Erez Vatik, Shavei Shomron Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Shiloh Tovi, Afikei Daat Hesder Yeshiva, Sderot Rabbi Elisha Yinon, Beit Shean Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Yaakov Yehudah Yakir, Beir Orot Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Yitzchak Levi, Kerem BeYavneh Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Yishai Lange, Beit Orot Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Yair Frank, Shiloh Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Nachum Tzafri, Elon Moreh Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Noam Konigsberg, Shaalabim Hesder Yeshiva Rabi Eliyahu Shachor, Elon Moreh Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Aryeh Stern, Kerem BeYavneh Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Shalom Shmidt, Ramat Gan Hesder Yeshiva Rabbi Yedidya Shimon, Rishon LeTzion Hesder Yeshiva
